Vivid Fuck yeah! - Yo Gabba Gabba!!!

Oh Archibald!

Today on my last day of Vivid, I am up bright and early, ready meet some new friends and have a party in my city! The sun is shinning and the birds are singing. That can only mean one thing... That Yo Gabba Gabba are in town to teach us that 'Music is Awesome!' (It's also my birthday today too!).

A mysterious red shoe appears on stage and not before long we discover it belongs to the leader of the Gabba's, DJ Lance Rock! But DJ Lance Rock and his toys are trapped within the mysterious large screen. But, with a little bit of magic, Lance transports on stage and hundreds of little cheers go up!

The pink flower girl Foofa, The red one eyed monster Muno, The short green man Brobee, the blue giant cat Toodee, and my personal favourite the little yellow robot named Plex, emerge from DJ Lance's toy box and are keen to make new friends and we do with 'The Name Game! Being familiar with each other enough we all (including the crowd) launch into a nice little game of peekaboo!

Then after all that fun was done, we met today's SUPER MUSIC FRIENDS!!! which are… Art vs Science!!! The boys from Art vs Science seem a little shy at first then they became our friends too! They play us a little musical treat called 'Flippers' where a giant seal and penguin teach us the flippers dance. Art vs Science weren't as loud as they normally are at festivals for kids who have drunk too much silly juice but hey we don't want our ears hurt.

After that, Ol' Brobee has trouble with being afraid of the dark but after a short musical number he was sorted and ready to party once more. Then a strange creature from gabba land appeared on the screen who was different. Archibald the worm, just wanted to make friends too. After some initial concern we got to know him very well and celebrated with a song about how all our friends are different which lead to Archibald being my new favourite gabba creature.

Dancey Dance was up next where we all learnt how to do the peanut butter stomp as taught by radio douch… I mean, radio fuddy duddy, Nova's 'Fitzy'. How Fitzy stumbled into gabba land is beyond me seeing as he had the same level of co-ordination as the peanut butter sandwich he tried to stomp. He tried in a typical 'Big Brother' fashion to steer the show to being all about him and his over the top (or bogan, for the older kids reading this) personality/accent, which left me wanting to get our friend archibald back out to eat him. Still, a radio and tv 'celebrity' like this may have been more recognisable to the mums and dads in the crowd than our super music friends. Again, I don't know how this douch..ag, I mean stupid head wandered into gabba land.

With our Dancey Dance guest Fitzy having his 15mins of fame… DJ Lance decides to get the gabba creatures and the crowd to play game of Freeze where robot Plex really seems to excel and a few of our filmed audience members were caught out!

Then out of the blue, it was time for 'Biz's Beat of the Day'. Famous beat boxer Biz Markie takes the crowd through some simple beats with the crowd trying to copy but only coming up with fart sounds. Some more tricky beats are just way too hard for us all, so Biz had one over on us. Biz then disappears from stage only to come down into the crowd and give some of the youngsters a chance to do a beat on the big screen! Some kids were a bit too shy, while others almost put Biz in his place!

Toodee then was the most trickiest to find in a game of hide and seek. After that we were all so hungry, so Lance and the gang sang 'Party in my Tummy' which had everyone singing along. Giant carrots and bits of cheese in our bellies singing along too! Lights were flashing and everyone was dancing and having fun. But then it was time for DJ Lance to go so he packed up Muno, Toodie, Foofa, Brobee and dare I say Plex and said goodbye and assured us that they would be back very soon.

It is easy to see why adults and kids alike are fond of this show. The lights, sounds and colours all make for quite the show on TV as well as on the live stage. DJ Lance is by far the hippest guy in children's entertainment (kudos also to the white DJ Lance in the lobby, sporting an exact DJ Lance suit) and is a great entertainer and host of the proceedings. Being a boy, I never liked Toodee or Foofa but Brobee and the oh so cool Plex (who can bust out those robot moves better than any human I have seen) definitely are a cool addition to Lance. Muno can be a bit whiney, but meh.

The 80's video game like imagery and the expressive cartoons (drawn by indie cartoonists Evan Dorkin, Sarah Dyer {Space Ghost, Bill and Ted, Action Girl Comics}) really sets this apart from other children's shows such as The Wiggles and Sesame Street as was the intentions of the shows creators (Christian Jacobs {The Aquabats} and Scott Schultz). If I ever wind up having children its nice to know that there are creators out there that don't have the same minds as the audience they are targeting. My kids will be Yo Gabba Gabberer's!

Despite the addition of Fitzy (bro), todays guests were super cool as well, with Biz Markie being born for this role in the gabba clan. Art vs Science were no Shins or Low, but meh. And even thought they seemed tired (it was 9.30am after all, I was damn well tired myself!) They still put on a cool little show and were a nice addition.

Ah, with Yo Gabba Gabba marking the end of my Vivid experience it was sad to have to leave and go back to reality. But it was a excellent experience and it was kind of calming to have something fun and colourful to go out on (It was a great happy start to my birthday too!)

Thanks to Vivid for an excellent line up and a world class experience. I can not wait to see what next years curator is and what they come up with… (Please Jeff Magnum or The Flaming Lips!)
